Please Read - Obstetric Cholestasis

I said it to my mw the first time [ itchy palms and feet] - she took no notice.
I sait it again to a different mw and she sent me for a blood test.
I got a phone call and was told it was abnormal...i was in a panic as was told just to wait to see the mw a few days later. Not good enough, i phoned back. Seems my blood test was normal..for a pregnant woman! Anway, i have to say, the doctor knew NOTHING about this disorder!!!! He had to phone the maternity hospital to find out about it. Beware, a lot of doctors especially know nothing about it.
When i had my ds, there was a lady who had it at 33wks. They had admitted her and were debating whether to deliver her baby. The poor woman was so itchy everywhere, she was in an awful state. I felt for her. x
I agree...dont take no for an answer.
My palm has been itchy a few times in this pregnancy , nothing major...but i always think about it.

I've got Gilbert's Syndrome which is where I have really high levels of billirubin in my liver which causes me to have a fast metabolism and feel tired a lot. My consultant is monitoring my bloods as she said that there is a risk that I could get this and I think I will as I itch loads. I had forgotten what it was called though so thanks for posting it! The down side of having gilbert's syndrome means that I can't have any painkillers as my liver can't break the toxins down properly. The joys of being pregnant :) x

I had OC with my second pregnancy. I was very itchy but also felt like my morning sickness was returning and my Dad even commented that I looked a bit yellow. Also, TMI, my stools were a really funny pale yellow colour which is another lesser known symptom. I called my midwife and she asked me to come in for bloods. I was diagnosed the same day which was a Friday. I must say my hospital were very on the ball, I was monitered over the weekend and had a c-section on the Monday as my levels were high, at 37 weeks. I am now 16 weeks pregnant and apparently have about a 60% chance of getting it again. I am under a consultant this time as a result of this. I would say if you have any of the symptoms (itching, nausea, jaundice, pale stools) put your foot down and get a blood test. Better to be safe than sorry.

I had the symptoms of this with my first pregnancy. Horrible itching all over, especially bad on the palms of my hands and soles of my feet. Went to my Dr. right away after doing some research on line. The blood work came back negative for it.

We don't know for certain what caused my son's death, but the high-risk specialist I am seeing now feels that I had something going on related to this. That further testing (whatever that would entail) would have shown that I was having problems.

Obviously it's something we're going to be watching for very closely during this pregnancy

I'm glad you posted this so everyone is aware and gets checked out if they're having symptoms.

Best of luck to everyone.:hugs:

How awful for you to have lost your baby. Noone should ever go through that. I was so worried i had it. It just goes to show and what makes it worse is that very few doctors seem to know about it. Really wish you all the best for this pregnancy xxxxxx

Thank you mumoffive. I was thinking about this last night and hoped I didn't scare anyone by my post. Cholestasis was not a definite cause of death but is a red flag looking back on the last week prior to his death.

Anyway, thank you for your kind words.....:hugs:

I also have itchiness on my arms and legs. When I scrathed it, sometimes the rashes will appear. during my first trimester, i had a blood test, testing my liver enzymes but the results are normal. Now I am in my 24th week and i stll have itchiness.
My dermatologist prescribe me a corticosteroid and some beta creme..
Still im feeling itchy.. Huhhuhuh...

My sister lost her first son to OC due an un educated midwife who kept telling her she had an allergic reaction and to change her soap, when Jack finally stopped moving and alerted my sister to seek advice from the hospital it was too late and Jack had to be delivered stillborn, thanks to the midwife!!
If this thread educates you just to trust your instincts and mum knows best it may save a life!!

deeh, so sorry about your sister's experience. you mind if I ask how far along she was when she lost LO? I am waiting on results today to see if I have it:-(

sorry just read this 34 weeks xx
she has gone on to have two gorgeous children now as they were aware and able to treat her and teh babies have to be delivered before 34 weeks also

Thank you for sharing, glad she has a happy family now. My tests just turned back negative but I will have to re-test later because I have the classic symptoms.

I had OC in my last pregnancy and had to be induced early because of it. I am having liver function tests every month this time to check if there is any sign of it returning.

i had it with my son i have started last night with itchy palms but i'm woundering is it to early to be starting with it if i'm getting it? i see my midwife tomorrow though so i'll mention it anyway to her and i'm sure she'll do bloods with my history. just worried as to what this will mean if it is the start of it? x

@ Levichips, I have read that it can start any time in the second or third trimester. I would recommend seeing an herbalist about getting a tea that can cleanse the liver. I have heard many people have even reversed their cholestasis using this approach. I had it with my last pregnancy so have a 60-90% chance of getting it this time. I plan on using diet and herbs to help support my liver and give me the best chance of not getting it. We'll see if it works!

does the itching just keep going ? Ive had a few spots on my arm that itched like crazy for a week or two and then stopped...and now I have the same tiny spot on just one side of my stomach..and they are itching like crazy..I just assume they will stop and dry up like the other ones did..

well saw the midwife and she has taken bloods because of my history but said it could be because of the heat i'm itching really hoping it is but get results back saturday x

My itching *if I remember correctly* started on my boobs. I ignored it because it was winter and because towards the end your boobs are growing and that tends to make them itch.. But it just kept getting more and more over a couple weeks and I was just itching myself soo much! I read up on lots of things and had remembered that if your palms start to itch that's a real problem. So I called in and they said it sounded like Cholestasis and wanted me to come in for tests.. sure enough... I was induced that night, but I was 38 weeks along.
