Can anyone recommend an app for delayed speech in a toddler please ?

We want to use it along side all the things we are doing 1-1 with DS.

I don’t have any suggestions, but would be interested to hear what other people have to say. Can I ask how old your son is? My son is 18 months and doesn’t use any words at all, my health visitor gave me a book with hints and tips, but I’m keen to try anything to help bring him on a bit

No apps but my kid loved this one channel on YT Kids. This lady throws animal toys in a pool and names them. Since developmentally they start with labeling, I didn’t mind him. Eventually he started saying them. I don’t think it helped. But I don’t think it hurt. Sorry for being not helpful

DS is now 23 months so obviously very worried about his speech. He basically babbles or talks in his own language. Pushing hard for a referral to SLT but banging my head against a brick wall. !! So frustrating .

haha thanks for your reply Dobby it’s so hard trying to work out the best for them !

Haha seriously. I think the best advice I got in speech therapy was to just let him lead me vs focusing on teaching a specific thing or using an app or using communication boards/pecs. Once I just started incorporating goals into activities he wanted and he was ready, I started seeing huge gains. But seriously always hard as a parent with second guessing and wondering if you’re doing right by them. But you so are!

Yes, your so right we have been working on getting him to pop bubbles as he wasn’t pointing and focusing on animal sounds ! I’m glad everything worked out for your DS ! It’s so tough

Thanks Dobby ! After numerous calls today and some tough words said (by me ) we have an appointment on Thursday for him to be officially assessed and referred to SLT !! God I am sooo happy !

Thank you @Phantom I will have a look !

Have you seen progress with your child/ren while using it ?

Hey! I know this is from a while back, but I just wondered how your DS is getting on now. When I first commented my DS was only 18 months old, he’s not just turned 2 and I’m no further forward with his speech. Got my first SLT appoint on the 14th but really keen to hear how you’re getting on! Hope all good!

Since he’s turned 2 he’s had a major speech explosion . He’s more or less caught up to what I would now expect from a 2 year old vocab wise - he’s for sure still got immature speech and will need therapy but he can talk and communicate with us .

26 months old is the month he really started talking and was saying a new word everyday nearly . Once he said that one word it all came within 4/5 months. He literally tells you everything now . I can understand but grandparents etc don’t sometimes .

SLT will hopefully help you further at your appointment . I am still waiting for an appointment , there was a massive waiting list!

Thank you so much. A lot of people I’ve spoken to have said that when their child turned 2.5 they seemed to have an explosion. He’s just about 25 months and I’ve been feeling so deflated about it all. But hearing your story has really been great and so positive. I really hope another month or so and he’ll be the same, praying every day for a speech explosion!

Honestly I was super worried and like you deflated about my DSs speech and he’s totally turned it around ! I hope the same for your DS too ! I’m sure it will come!
Please come back and update xx

Speech blubs

I know this is a bit of an old thread, but I was also going to suggest Speech Blubs.
My now 3 year old absolutely loves it. I downloaded it when he was around 2y2m. He was very delayed in speech - by the time he turned two he was barely using 2 words consistently. We started speech therapy at 2y2m. Within around 6 weeks he suddenly had a long list of words he was using regularly.
His speech development gradually grew into phrases and sentences, but he still does not pronounce labial sounds consistently (b, m, p).
I don't know if it was the speech blubs that helped more or the speech therapy. Probably both. We stopped speech therapy after about 8 months though because he started getting very resistant to what the therapist was trying to get him to do and point blank refused to cooperate, so i couldn't see any benefit to the sessions at all. He was talking pretty fluently by then, but still not using labial sounds where they should be used (a "bin" he calls a "nin", for "big" he says "gig". But he can say purple and mom and mamma etc, so he can say them, just doesn't when there's a different consonant involved in the same word).
Since stopping speech therapy he has started using speech blubs much more regularly. Of his own accord. He absolutely LOVES it.
I will probably pick up therapy again later this year, but with a different therapist, to try and work more on the labial sounds, but I figure for now at least speech blubs is drawing his attention to words and their makeup and different sounds.

Thanks for your reply !

DS can now talk a lot , actually better than some of our friends toddlers his own age !

We did do a lot of 1-1 therapy in the house aided by a SLT ! Don’t get me wrong he will still need speech therapy but more for immature speech sounds as opposed to not talking at all !

I’m actually amazed how much he’s come on over the last 7/8 months !

That’s amazing! So happy to hear this! Can you remind me what age your DS is now? My DS is now 26, nearly 27 months. He’s definitely trying more, he’s saying more words, but still isn’t putting two words together and the majority of words he uses other people would probably struggle to understand. We do speech therapy every 3 weeks, it’s just a zoom call though due to covid so he isn’t really involved, it’s more the therapist giving me techniques to use with him. It’s maybe helping a bit, I don’t know. I still worry. So happy to hear you’ve seen a huge improvement though x

I know the question wasn't directed at me, but my son could barely say two words consistently at 26 months. By 28 months he suddenly had a long list of words.
I think started putting words together around age 29/30 months.

Thank you so much for responding. That’s great to hear. Let’s hope I see an improvement in the next few months!

My DS is 2 1/2 years old now . He will be 3 in June. Soon as he started saying those first few worst last July/August he was on a roll ! He didn’t put two words together for another few months after but now says 3/4 sentences . He can count to 20 and from 10-0 . Knows all his colours . He’s a smart kid ! Whether he just retained all this information and it just came out god knows !

He’s still got other issues regarding ASD which we are waiting for an appointment to get him assessed .

But honestly keep doing what you are it’s very frustrating and you seem to be getting nowhere but it will all come !
