Nighttime Potty Training when that's the only time he poops

Hi All!

My 3.5 year old has been day trained for a little over a year now. However he has never pooped in the potty. He wears pull-ups to nap/bed and that is when he poops. Otherwise he would probably by dry. I can't seem to find any advice for this particular situation but surely someone has been in the same boat.

How do I get him to go in the potty?? I have started putting him on the potty before bed as part of his routine, I also get him to pretend like he's blowing bubbles but no success, yet. His older brother shares a room with him and sometimes when older bro goes to bed an hour or so later the 3yo has pooped in his pull up already.

They usually sleep with the door closed and right now there is a child proof knob on the handle so he cannot open it on his own. Of course, I can take it off to train but not sure what to tell him or how to encourage him to go to the potty in the middle of the night. We've had issues with him staying in bed at bedtime in the past as well so I don't want him to think this is a free for all, or a reason to stay up sort of thing.

Thoughts?

Hi, I didn’t want to read and run eventhough I can’t offer any real advice.

I know a few people who have had the same issue with their boys and they read some books which seemed to help. We have one book called where’s the poop? By Julie Markes which could be useful.

First thing I thought of when I read your post was constipation ? With him being so relaxed he might be able to poop better at night ? .

I did come across these tips on Google

Tip 1: Feed your toddler their final meal earlier than you usually would
Tip 2: No liquids before bedtime
Tip 3: Include a potty trip in your toddler’s bedtime routine
Tip 4: Go commando
Tip 5: Put a potty in your toddlers’ room

I agree. My son often poops when he’s asleep because of constipation issues. Can you bring it up to his doctor? They may be able to guide you more specifically.

When is bath time? I know some kids with sensory issues around pooping, my son included, get really relaxed in the bath. A lot of times, in fact the majority of times, that he poops is mid bath. He’ll pee before the bath then after a few minutes in the tub hops out to poop.

but if he’s never pooped in the potty, this sounds more like a sensory issue around pooping in general that needs to be addressed. Luckily this is an issue a lot of kids go through so plenty of reading. I know ladies in here suggest oh crap potty training, and she devotes a whole section to addressing oooo issues. I didn’t read it. It’s on my to do list.m

best of luck! I’m not brave enough to go diaper less yet lol
