Question about progesterone supplementation

This month I was prescribed progesterone supplements to take in the second half of my cycle after two back to back chemical pregnancies. I’m super worried about misjudging my ovulation day and starting it too early. My cycle has been a bit different after my chemical last month and I feel like my ovulation symptoms ramped up much earlier than normal, which is leaving me second guessing all my normal fertility signs.

Does anyone know what happens if I start it too early? Would it prevent ovulation or not really have an effect?

I am not really that much help when it comes to starting it around ovulation time. But I have taken progesterone while pregnant. I start it at bfp but that's not much help in your situation I'm thinking. What I would suggest is you get some ovulation test strips and use those to pinpoint ovulation as best you can. Or temp if that's something you are doing. But if you are worried at all, I'd talk to your doctor. They can answer your questions about when to start taking the medication and possibly even do a blood test or ultrasound to confirm exactly when you ovulated.

This is all coming from my experience when doing ivf so it may not fully line up with your situation. Any time I'm gearing up to do a transfer I start my progesterone 5 to 7 days prior. It's to help trick my body into thinking it did ovulate. If I were to stop taking it before I was supposed to (basically before my body could take over making it on it's own) it would trigger everything to think I didn't fall pregnant and induce a period. All that to say... I think it would probably stop you from ovulating if you hadn't yet and could stop your period from starting even if you didn't end up pregnant.

Thanks for the replies. I had an ultrasound on cd 13 and ovulated on cd 15, which is exactly what my gynaecologist predicted based on my ultrasound. She told me to start my progesterone on cd 16 this month.

I was able to confirmed ovulation based on test strips (although I feel like they never got quite as dark as I’d have liked) and worse than usual ovulation pain and well as sore nipples post o, which is a sure sign for me. I started the progesterone the next night, so somewhere between 24-48 hours after o.

I think I was just so worried about messing something up since this is our first cycle using any type of medication and I just really want it to work so we can avoid any other types of interventions.

We have two cycles with just progesterone and after that they want us to move on to Femara.

I hope that little bit of extra help with the progesterone is all you need. I know a lot of people that it did the trick for.

Does anyone know how long (how many cycles) can one take progesterone safely? I have been prescribed this due to to having a luteal phase of 6 days but not clear whether there can be any long term sides effect from prolonged use

I’m not sure, but I know progesterone can be used to treat menopause and it’s used in birth control, so I’d think that you could hypothetically use it for quite a while. I’ve done two cycles now using the progesterone and I’m finding that it’s also regulating the start of my following cycle. I’ve been ovulating earlier, having better quality cm, and my fertility signs are starting earlier in my cycle as well.
