Hey I wonder if anyone could help ease my nerves.
I had a pulmonary embolism after having my last baby so have been put on daily enoxaparin injections for this whole pregnancy.
For anyone who has used this in pregnancy before..
I'm concerned with how they will control bleeding during labour.
Do you bleed more because of the injections ect? Can't stop stressing about it!

I hope you had your question answered by your doctor already but in case you are still wondering, I can maybe help you out a bit.

I have a clotting disorder and I developed a DVT after my last pregnancy so I'm going to probably need stronger blood thinners if we ever have another baby. But here's what I know about this medication. Enoxaparin is a once a day injection because the effects of the medication stay in your system for 24 hours. The other common blood thinner prescribed for cases like this is heparin, also an injection but it's usually needed twice a day since the effects only stay in your system for 12 hours. However, enoxaparin doesn't have an antidote while heparin does.

My doctor would like me to start once daily enoxaparin injections at the time of my bfp and I would continue them until I'm 35-ish weeks. Then I would switch to twice daily heparin injections. This is because I deliver my babies at 37 weeks and my doctor doesn't want me on enoxaparin (also known as Lovenox) too close ot delivery. I would switch to the heparin shots at 35 weeks becuase if I were to do an injection and then half an hour later, my water breaks and I'm in full blown labor, the doctor can give me another medication to reverse the effects of the heparin and lower the chances of me having bleeding issues during labor and my delivery. the reason doctors will prescribe enoxaparin injections instead of heparin is because they don't really want ot make you jab yourself twice a day for the entire pregnancy if they can get away with only needing to make you jab yourself once a day for most of it.

I do want to say that I've never been on these medications since my clotting disorder hasn't caused me issues and I've only ever had ot take a daily baby aspirin for anticoagulant treatment during pregnancy thus far.

My best advice is to talk to your doctor about this. Write down your questions and bring them to your next appointment. Email or call them if you don't want to wait that long. But for the most part, alot of women are on these medications during pregnancy for a variety of reasons and do just fine. But it's still important to be on the same page as your doctor so ask them what the treatment plan is. They may have you switch the heparin injections closer to birth or even stop the medications altogether. It really depends on the situation and the doctor. Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy!
