TTC/Pregnancy while Breastfeeding and Tandem Nursing: Information and Support

My boobs were not sore at all this pregnancy. My nipples are very sore with nursing now but that only happened once my milk went away.

Come to think of it, I suspected my milk all but disappeared about the time my nipples were killing me!

Contractions from nursing? Been having them a lot in the last 24 hours, is this normal? Scared of pre term labor. Don't want to stop nursing unless I have to but I have to admit these contractions are freaking me out. Did this happen to anyone?

I don't think it is a problem, but I'm not an expert. I don't notice contractions when I nurse, but I also don't regularly feel BH either (although they've shown me on the monitor when I'm having them). I DO feel contractions immediately after orgasm, but it hasn't stopped me from having sex either.

Thanks, that was helpful to read. I know it's generally considered safe to nurse during pregnancy but when I started getting rather strong contractions last night and this morning, I sort of second guessed everything.

Are you high risk for preterm labor? Has pelvic rest/bed rest/any kind of rest or anything been recommended?

Also any chance you might have been dehydrated?

I had a leep procedure a long time ago which they said "could" put me at risk for an incompetent cervix, but I had serial ultrasounds with my first pregnancy and everything was always fine and I went to term so I think the thought is chances are everything should be fine this time too. I'm not going to do all the ultrasounds this time but I'm assuming it will be a non issue again.

I probably was a little dehydrated.

Did you ever get nursing aversions?

I know nobody has posted in here for a while but just wondering if there is anybody out there nursing and pregnant?
We've just discovered we're pregnant with number 4. Complete shock, guessing I'm about 10 weeks on already! Currently nursing our youngest who is almost 9 months.
He's been really fussy on the breast for weeks now pulling off and on regularly, making my nipples sore. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to make sure this isn't the end of his breastfeeding journey? My daughter self-weaned the same time I fell pregnant with my youngest when she was 19 months. Would feel so sad if this pregnancy causes my 8 month old to stop!

Hi! Congratulations! H&H 9 months to you!!!

I am not currently nursing or pregnant, but I nursed my daughter throughout my pregnancy with my son, and went on to tandem them for the next four months (until my daughter self weaned). So, YES it is possible to continue to nurse your baby.

To be honest though, I do know that it doesn't work out for a lot of people, even if they really want to. Your milk can change taste (which some babies don't mind, but some babies don't like) and you can potentially dry up. Some babies don't mind if you dry up, and will still continue to dry nurse. Others will wean at that point. It's really going to be up to your baby - there's really not much you can do other than continue to offer the breast.

I understand your struggle with potentially weaning early, as my son went on strike at 13 months, and I was never able to coax him back to the breast. I continued to pump until he was about 18 months, but finally had to let it go. It was rough, especially when my daughter nursed until she was 3 years & 2 months old before she self weaned. I never expected him to stop so soon.

Oh, and as for the painful nipples YES!!!! Breastfeeding through pregnancy is pretty painful. Some women go through nursing aversions too. But if you really want it to work out, and your baby is willing, you can do this. Best of luck to you! :flower:

I am not currently nursing and pregnant, but I have nursed through both my second and third pregnancies.

Second pregnancy: I was pregnant with my daughter while still nursing my son. My milk lessened immediately (well, around 8 weeks), but did not dry up until around 16-18 weeks. Colostrum came in around 20-24 weeks and we dry nursed in the inbetween time. Tandem nursed both kids until I became pregnant with my third, with no desire to tridum nurse I weaned the oldest.

Third pregnancy, milk did not dry up until around 20 weeks. Got colostrum, lots of colostrum, around 24 weeks. Nursed right through and am tandem nursing both DD and 8 week old DS.

I had so much colostrum from nursing DD while pregnant the nurses thought my milk had come in already. Both my daughter (when nursed my son through pregnancy) and my son (nursed my daughter through pregnancy) did not lose any measurable weight after birth, both left the hospital at or above their birth weight. DD was AT her birthweight when we left the hospital, and significantly above at her next check up. DS was not weighed right before leaving, he had gained nearly a pound at his 3 day check up (the day my milk came in, so must of it was colostrum).

looking for some support. I'm TTC while BF. My daughter doesn't Bf very much any more, but I was wondering if anyone struggled to conceive while BF and if her BFing 2-3 times a day would effect my chances.

Me too.... my dd is 2 and still bf regularly. I've heard if you have a regular cycle your chances are the same as any other persons but I haven't experienced that. In fact my periods are really light and my doctor said even though I'm most likely ovulating the hormones involved in bf make it so your lining isn't thick enough to support a pregnancy so it might take a minute and may not happen until fully weaned and even though bf is supposed to be OK during pregnancy I wouldn't be surprised if it increases the miscarriage risk. Here's hoping we beat the odds

Just want to say hi and offer some support.
I breastfed my son all through pregnancy and have been tandem feeding. Currently feeding 4yo and 2yo and 5 weeks pregnant.
Hoping to wean my 4yo during pregnancy and continue to feed and maybe tandem feed youngest two. Although our daughter will be 3.5 when baby is born so we shall see ❤

Hi all currently breastfeeding my 11.5 month old. And started ttc in June. I have only had one period that was in April. I'm currently CD 70. All negative test dont even know for sure if I ovulated or not. Just wanted to say hi!

Hello! How likely is it to get pregnant while breastfeeding? It's been a while since I've been exclusively breastfeeding, but so far no period. I have felt a little off lately, but several tests have been negative :/

If you ovulate then pregnancy is possible. I got pregnant while breastfeeding when my little one was 3.
