Hi ladies. My 12 week scan is coming up on Aug 13th. My doctor gave me the info on the NIPT testing, and I am pretty sure I'm not going to have it done. I'm 34 and have had no complications, and my chance for a Trisomy 21 baby is about .3%. I've read about so many women who have had bad experiences with this test. Also, tbh, I'm hearing that this is going to cost me around $1000 out of pocket, which is quite a lot when we are saving up for my maternity leave with no pay (thanks, USA). I'm going to request that my doctor do a NT instead, and go from there.

I've been researching all morning and I haven't really discovered any better way to do the initial screening than the NT or NIPT. Does anyone know how reliable ultrasounds are at diagnosing chromosomal abnormalities? Or if anyone can direct me to some information, I'd appreciate it. OR if anyone has any personal experiences they'd like to share. Thank you!

I would just do the NT scan and bloodwork (they’re always done together) if you don’t want the NIPT.

Hi. Just to say in my country we are not offered any chromosomal screening as standard, no NT and I don’t even know what NIPT is (I’m about to google it). All abnormalities here are picked up via ultrasound and can be confirmed with blood work or amniocentesis afterwards.

I have a lovely friend who had a baby with trisomy 18, which was initially picked up via ultrasound. They could then confirm through amniocentesis, but she chose not to, so the only info came from ultrasounds and it was all accurate.
