Hello everyone,

I’ve suddenly feeling really scared about child birth.... I’m 19 weeks pregnant with my second child so have been through labour before but my son was 6 weeks early which made the birth and first few weeks or even months very intense. My labour was quite fast too so it all happened so quickly and I must have had 15 doctors/nurses in the room when I gave birth.

Not only am I worried about another premature labour I am very worried about complications in terms of my health.... when I had my son my placenta was retained and after a natural birth I had to have a spinal to have the placenta removed. I’ve heard hopper stories of complications to do with retained placenta. My sister almost bleed to death as the same happened and she wasn’t properly monitored, it was only when a nurse went to check her over hour later after birth she noticed a huge clot inside.

I know I am being paranoid but is it normal to feel like this with your second baby?

Yes and No? Just because it happened with one or your sisters aunt Sally, doesnt mean it will happen to you.

myself: DS- 36wks c-section. DD1- 36wks c-section 2 week NICU stay. DD2- 40wk induced VBA2C. DD3- 34wks c-section 3 week NICU stay. However, i told EVERYONE with DD3, she COULD come early and i needed to be ready. I was ok with 36 weeks but 34 was a shock. All of them had a suspected placenta issue but not confirmed. Only DS and DD3 had a similar birth story of all of them.

Thank you for sharing your story, I have hope then that my second may not be like my first borns birth... it would be lovely to carry to full term or just a bit nearer than 34 weeks. It took me by surprise and with baby being in NICU for two weeks it’s not how I imagined. My mum did have premature births too with both her children and I was struggling to walk and having tightening daily from about 29 weeks so I should have figured.

I keep thinking the worst, but trying to be more positive each day. I suffer with anxiety which doesn’t help and COVID-19 has not helped!

thank you again x

I wish I could tell you that there’s no risk of anything happening, but as you know things happen that are completely out of our control. Feeling anxious, especially after a traumatic experience, is completely normal. Talk to your doctor about your concerns and see if there is anything in place to help ease those fears. Let them know there’s a history of that in your family so you can be closely monitored for that after birth. My first birth went pretty smooth despite being induced because of elevated bp. I was already 7cm when I got there and all they really did to get things going was breaking my water and a little pitocin. I had an epidural then napped til I was 10cm then she was out 24 minutes later. My second I had an unexpected induction at 36 weeks due to pre-e. I was hooked up to tons of machines, medicated, and couldn’t walk. It took a while to get things moving, but once labor started it went fast and intense. I had planned an epidural, but there was no time. I didn’t realize at the time, but it was really stressful and a bit traumatic. I’m 17 weeks with my surprise 3rd baby. I’m terrified of pre-e and baby coming early. However, I tell myself that worrying only adds to the problem and doesn’t help. I am just trying to take things day by day and pray for the best.

Ditto what Jules8 said. Make sure to express your concerns to your doctor. Communication is very important. It's perfectly normal to be worried! Thankfully my children were all born at 38 or 39 weeks. My 2nd baby had low blood sugar at birth and required a 2 day stay at the hospital. My 3rd baby was was born healthy but had weight issues and almost was admitted back into the hospital. Pregnancy and birth is an unknown, fascinating time and it's quite normal to be worried even if you have not had any traumatic experiences!

My first was born at 27 weeks and I had about 15 doctors / nurses in the room with me as well. My second was born at 34 weeks, even with the progesterone shots I was still induced at 34 weeks because I had a rupture and was leaking fluid. My third was full term. Worried that something similar might happen with my third pregnancy was definitely on my mind. I would say after having a traumatic birth especially giving birth to a premature baby, it's perfectly normal to be worried.

Like others have said just talk with your doctor and express any concerns you may have with your treatment plan. I'm sure they already know about your history right? I was definitely skeptical with having weekly progesterone shots and whether or not it would work to prevent me from going into early labor. After talking with my doctors about it, they were able ease my worries at least a little bit anyway. To this day I still don't know why I go into early labor, but I'm just glad that I know I can go full-term with help.
